A Typical Day At This Yoga Retreat

Get comfortable, close your eyes and imagine doing this every day for 7 days
Envision waking up slowly, comfortable and carefree, the sun shining happily into your cozy and gorgeous digs. You put your favourite yoga pants on and step out into a paradise-like setting, with nature and wildlife surrounding you and a light breeze coming off the ocean, right at your doorstep.
You start your day in silence and join the group for some meditation and pranayama (breath work). Then a light breakfast of fresh tropical fruit, yogurt, granola, cereal, tea and coffee with friends. Later in the morning you enjoy an energizing yoga class that focuses on pranayama (breath work), flowing standing sequences, and core strengthening. Afterwards, feeling rejuvenated and strong, you sit down with your new found friends (or old friends in some cases) to enjoy a specially prepared vegetarian Ayurveda lunch.
As the day continues, the hardest decision you will have to make is whether you want to relax at the beach or pool, go surfing, snorkelling, paddle boarding, whale watching, explore the surrounding area, enjoy a fabulous massage or take a siesta.
Later on, after some fun in the surf and sun, you will slip back into those yoga pants for another yoga class that is deeply restorative. Once we are finished, you enjoy another Ayurvedic meal in great company and possibly some meditation later on.
After the sun goes down and you back in your sumptuous bed reflecting on your day, you drift off to sleep effortlessly, knowing that tomorrow brings you nothing but peace and tranquility.

Punta Mita is a fishing village and luxury resort on Mexico’s Pacific coast. A stunning, jungled mountainous peninsula tumbles into the sea on a small peninsula on Banderas Bay. Offshore are the biodiverse Marieta Islands, with wildlife such as humpback whales and blue-footed boobies. To the north is the laid-back surf village of Sayulita (which we will be visiting!).
The beaches that grace the coast from here to Nuevo Vallarta – part of a larger 150km stretch known as Riviera Nayarit – are some of the best on the central Pacific coast. The water is almost always clear and aquamarine, the sand is white and the surf can get fun too. Punta Mita is surrounded on three sides by nine and a half miles of Pacific Ocean beaches and coves including Litibu Bay.
Punta Mita is at the same latitude as the Hawaiian Islands. It is kept comfortable year round by gentle sea breezes, with average summer temperatures around 85 °F (29 °C), and 75 °F (24 °C) during winter months.

From Mindy Reser, Owner of Villa Ananda:

We welcome you to the tranquil paradise of Villa Ananda for your Yoga Retreat. Our space is very distinct from most retreat centers. Being a private beach front Villa located in secluded neighbourhood of 35 homes, guests feel wrapped in the lush tropical arms of nature, cared for by the hands and hearts of conscious staff and therapists. The intimate yet spacious grounds allow guests to interact together and spend time alone as desired. The pictures don’t quite do the space justice. We constantly hear how guests are awe struck by the tranquil beauty and attention to detail all throughout. Come enjoy!
Villa Ananda is both a sanctuary and a very energized space.  The comment received by guests the moment they walk in is, “ah, it’s so peaceful here.”  There is a seamless flow from inside to out; fountain, bridge and garden inside, palm studded patio, pool and ocean view from every space outside.  Great attention is taken to detail in decor, caring for the grounds and likewise caring for our guests.  An amazing team of workers care for us all.

There are a number of gorgeous suites at Villa Ananda. Some are on the main floor, others on the rooftop. If you have a preferred room, I will do my best to accommodate your wishes.

10 AYURVEDA TIPS FROM VILLA ANANDA

Everyone who works at Villa Ananda has studied Panchakarma in India (the hardcore way), for years. They are die-hard and know their stuff inside and out. Here are a few of the principles they share with their guests:

  1. Ginger is a natural antibiotic. It also helps with digestion if you eat a few slices of fresh ginger about 10 minutes before your meal. This helps fuel the “fire” in your belly, which can then more easily digest your food.
  2. Don’t drink liquid during your meal, as it puts out the digestive “fire”.
  3. Some foods should not be mixed, as it’s harder to digest, such as sweet and savory, or raw and cooked. These should be eaten at least an hour apart.
  4. Everything in health begins with digestion.
  5. Cilantro will help with skin and acne, and natural chelation (ie. it pulls toxins and heavy metals from your body).
  6. Helichrysum is good for getting rid of scars. It’s a common medicine used in Mexico, and it’s effective.
  7. Turmeric pills will help with digestion and overall health.
  8. Drink a jug of water every day. Add some lemon to make it detoxifying. If you’re weaning yourself off of sugary drinks, you can sweeten it with honey or maple syrup.
  9. Rose Geranium balances hormones.
  10. When foods are as close to their state in nature as possible, that’s when they deliver the most potent nutrition.

Top 5 Reasons to Not Miss This Retreat!

REST AND RELAX

REASON #1

Being on retreat is about focusing on you. Practicing your yoga, eating healthy foods, slowing down and finding much needed restoration, relaxation and rejuvenation is so important. It helps remind us of what is most meaningful in our lives. The result? Getting inspired, hopeful, lighter and open to the possibilities in life!

DEEPEN YOUR PRACTICE

REASON #2

Our lives are incredibly busy and finding the time to practice yoga, or anything else, can be challenging. A committed week could be just what you need to rededicate yourself into practice and deepen your experience in breath work, asana, meditation and philosophy. Practicing every day you will notice the changes not only in your physical body, but in your mental state as well. Coming home afterwards, you might even be inspired to start a new home practice or take your existing practice to a new level.

CREATE COMMUNITY

REASON #3

When a group of people on a similar path get together in a beautiful place, new friendships are bound to happen! It is incredibly inspiring to surround yourself with like minded people from around the world and practice together. Coming together like this in community is sometimes the perfect mirror to remind us that, although everyone is unique, we are all connected.

NEW PERSPECTIVES

REASON #4

When we step out of our regular lives, we can invest our time into contemplation, setting intentions for life, turning obstacles into opportunities and visioning our dreams. Experiencing the unknown is an accelerated way to grow and learn. You will have the luxury of time to do just what you want to do. perspective changing guaranteed!

YOU ARE WORTH IT!

REASON #5

We can always come up with reasons or excuses for not doing something for ourselves. We often find it easier to do for others without ever stopping and providing that same nurturing for ourselves! You, more than anyone else, deserves to be treated and taken care of. When we are happy, healthy and inspired, we can lead by example for others. Make this investment in YOU today, it will be one of the best decisions you ever make.

Carla’s retreat was extraordinary. The two daily yoga sessions nicely framed the day while allowing us time in between to do our own thing. Carla is an excellent teacher who really knows her stuff but is also fun and compassionate. I loved the extras too – cooking lesson, gong bath, salsa dance lesson, massage etc. My practice has already shifted and even thought I am “back in my life” I feel I will be able to retain the focus I left Mexico with. Thank you! Alexandra Ewashen

Lessons from Traveling

Lessons from Traveling

As many of you know, I have been in Mexico for the past few weeks – first leading a 17 day 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training and then hitting the road for some adventure and exploration. Today I wrapped up a 7 day trip to the interior cities of Guanajuato and Guadalajara (you can see the pictures on my Facebook page). And what an incredible week it was: art, music, gastronomy, architecture, history, culture – with each day beginning as a mystery and blossoming into delights of discovery. I adore traveling, because at its essence, it is an opportunity to feel more connected to the world around me.
There are also many other wonderful reasons to travel. Here are just a few:

  • Experiencing a new culture – being somewhere new allows you to fully immerse yourself and appreciate that new place from a place of deep feeling – from the people, the language, the food, the cultural practices and everything in between. This world we live in is pretty incredible and we can gain so much appreciation for beauty of humanity when we take a trip.
  • Stepping out of our comfort zone – nothing like exploring a different culture to take on the unfamiliar. Is it hard sometimes? Sure is – especially for an introvert like me. But great things can lie on the other side of fear. The exhilaration of trying something new and expanding your horizons can’t be beat.
  • Getting creative – traveling makes you think out of the box and get innovative. Especially when you don’t speak the language! Studies show that people who travel think more creatively and are better at adjusting to new situations. That’s a great skill to bring home into your regular life.
  • Friendships – some of my best travel memories are of the incredible people I have met along the way. Some I am still in touch with 25+ years later! And this trip was no exception – we made a heartfelt connection with our landlady Elvira who took us to the most unexpected places (including a telescope star viewing with the head astrophysicist at the top of the university). The kindness and generosity of people abounds and the global network of friendships is strengthened with every connection.
  • Patience and Presence – when traveling, many things happen that are outside of our control. Losing your patience, especially in a different culture, rarely has a positive outcome. And maybe if things always went smoothly, the adventure wouldn’t exist. A few deep breaths and going with the flow is a great practice and maybe with enough opportunities, might stick upon the return home.

What do you love most about traveling? Send me a note and share your stories and adventures  – I’d love to hear from you.
love & pranams,
carla

Often called the ‘crown-jewel of the Riviera Nayarit, sunny Sayulita is home to beautiful beaches, Mexican culture, world-class activities and more.
A charming fishing village, Sayulita has picturesque beaches, charming restaurants and great food. Unlike some other Mexican towns, tourists mingle with locals in a relaxed atmosphere, without the hustle and bustle of major touristy resorts.
Sayulita offers a variety of activities such as horseback riding, hiking, jungle canopy tours, snorkelling, fishing and of course surfing! Sayulita is widely known to surfers around the world, and there will be an opportunity to take some surfing lessons during your afternoons or day off. This is often one of the highlights of the retreat!
As the Lonely Planet guide says, “if you want a beach town getaway where you can abandon the car and truly chill out, Sayulita qualifies”!

This is my sixth year returning to the charming Hotelito Los Sueños, or Little Hotel of Dreams. It is truly a place to relax and enjoy the beautiful tropical seaside village of Sayulita. Located about a 10 minute walk from the village centre, Los Sueños is tucked away in a quiet part of town and is just one minute from the beach.
There are a variety of different rooms that are all tastefully decorated in a traditional Mexican style with ceramic tile floors. There is now a new addition to the hotel with beautiful bright suites. Los Sueños is also committed to being green – where 40% of electricity comes from solar panels, all organic kitchen waste is composted, only biodegradable cleaning products are used and a minimizing of laundry and plastics.
The hotel also has boogie boards, bicycles and beach towels for use by all guests.
The staff at Hotelito Los Sueños are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. This is one of the main reasons I return year after year! Ready to help you with any need, the Hotelito team do everything possible to make your stay extra special.
There are 2 yoga studios that are beautiful, open-aired spaces with natural rubber floors. The owner of the hotel is also a yoga practitioner and wanted to share his joy of practicing yoga in a tropical environment. The studio was designed and built with great care and attention for the yoga practitioner.
You can also check out their website for more images of their beautiful rooms and everything else that they have to offer.
NEW this year –  you will be able to specifically choose the type of room you would like!
Each day you are provided with fresh, light, and healthy brunches after every morning practice. As for dinners, I have chosen not to include some of the evening meals in the price of the retreat so that we are able to visit different restaurants and order as you like. I make reservations at some outstanding restaurants do we can try all the wonderful and delicious food that Sayulita has to offer. There is an opening reception the night you arrive, a cooking class with master chef Teddy Solano and then our final night celebration dinner at Hotelito Los Sueños.
Mexican cuisine is known around the world for its outstanding flavour, creativity and variety. There is an incredible abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood and more. You will eat well in Mexico, I guarantee! The only challenge will be to sample so many wonderful dishes.
Dietary restrictions such as gluten and dairy free are very easy to accommodate if needed.

And we often find it easier to do for others without ever stopping and providing that same nurturing for ourselves!

Your guides on this adventure will be Carla Wainwright, Natasha Scott, Mugs McConnell and Latika.

CARLA WAINWRIGHT, M.Sc., SOYA, E-RYT500, IYTA

Carla started practicing yoga in 1995 so she could touch her toes. Eighteen years later she definitely can touch her toes, and is helping others nourish their own unique journey toward self-discovery. Her practice and teaching meld both classical and contemporary approaches to the practice with a particular focus on the mayakoshas as a means to merge with the Essential Self. She loves to work with women to help release their inner Shakti. Carla is a Doctor of Homeopathy and creatively integrates the principles of Yoga and Homeopathy to help unlock a student’s deepest potential within. She has studied with Mugs McConnell, Shirley Daventry French, Erich Schiffmann, Shiva Rea, Rod Stryker, Dana Flynn, Minke de Vos, Geeta Iyengar and many other wonderful teachers. Carla is a founding owner of Chinook Yoga in Prince George, BC, and a Lead Trainer for the SOYA YTT programs in Prince George and Mexico.

NATASHA SCOTT, SOYA, E-RYT500, IYTA

Natasha Scott graduated from the SOYA 500 Hour training in 2009 with a specialty in prenatal yoga.  Never one to stop learning her enthusiasm to serve others led her to specialize in Yoga for Chronic Pain, certified by Neil Pearson.

Natasha teaches a wide range of Hatha Yoga with a strong background in the Sivananda lineage (from her Teacher Mugs). From her super gentle yoga classes to strength in flow yoga, Natasha has a class to suit everyone.

She is a Yoga Alliance registered prenatal yoga teacher (RYPT) and Childrens Yoga Teacher (RYCT). She is a Certified Thai Massage Practitioner (Metta in Motion with Mia Blackwell), and a Reiki practitioner. She brings all of these yoga tools to her classes to create a full yogic experience.

Natasha is a Lead Trainer for the SOYA YTT Immersions at Sorrento, BC and Melaque, Mexico.

PHILOSOPHY TEACHER: LATIKA, SOYA, E-RYT500

Latika Pierrette Claude began her 200 hour studies at Kripalu with Jashoda Edmunds and Brahmani Liebman in 2006. In 2007 she completed the SOYA 300 hour upgrade working one-on-one with Marion (Mugs) McConnell.

Latika wanted to deepen her own personal practice and believed the deepest teachings would be in a yoga teacher training.  She has found yoga to be a path of discovery that never ceases to amaze and delight her! It wasn’t long before she realized that the best way to share the gifts of yoga is by teaching it to others.

Latika has a passion for  Yin Yoga, whom she learned from Sarah Powers and Bernie Clark. She has studied Tantra yoga with Rod Stryker and Pandit Rajmani Tigunait at the Himalayan Institute, and Erich Schiffmann’s Freedom Yoga at the SOYA Annual Retreats. Latika lives full time in Mexico, spending summers in Ajijic and winters in Melaque, where she is the owner of Latika Yoga Studio.

Guest teacher and SOYA founder MARION MCCONNELL

SOYA Co-Owner, SYVCA, E-RYT500, IYTA

Marion, or “Mugs” to all who know her, is one of Canada‘s Yoga Pioneers. She is the co-owner of SOYA with her husband Bob. In 2012 she was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of her lifetime contribution to the Yoga community in Canada and abroad. She sits on the Standards Committee for Yoga Alliance and served as the Canadian Representative for the International Yoga Teachers’ Association (IYTA) from 1982-2016. Mugs’ early training was in the Sivananda lineage under Swami Vishnudevananda. She was the last disciple of Sri Yogiraj Dr. Hari Dickman. Namadeva Acharya played a huge role in her love and understanding of mantra, which she often combines with mudra. She has completed over 100 hours in Freedom Yoga teacher training with Erich Schiffmann, influencing her love of free-flowing yoga. Over the years her teaching style has been impacted by additional studies with Rod Stryker, Mark Stephens, Friedel Khattab, Dharma Mittra, along with many others. She designed and directs the 200 hour and 300 hour Advanced SOYA YTT programs and leads master class workshops. Mugs is the author of the book “Letters From the Yoga Masters,” which has become a textbook for all SOYA teacher training programs. She is a member of the Board of Directors for Yoga Alliance and their Standards Committee.

I couldn’t have asked for anything more out of my teacher training experience. It was an amazing journey with the best of teachers!! This program helps to build a wonderful community and of course expands the love for yoga immensely. I am eager to share my love with others through teaching. Jeanette Orydzuk

The Teacher Training totally exceeded my expectations. I really had no idea that the experience would be as profound in terms of personal growth through yoga. Many new layers of what yoga is were peeled back during the two weeks to reveal an amazing apparatus of life that can only serve to further enrich my life. Of course somewhere within myself I always knew that what I had exposure too during the two weeks existed and that I had the power and strength within me to tap into it and that would explain why I ended up there. The teaching was so amazing in terms of presenting what is there, allowing us as students to explore what we were comfortable with and making us feel incredibly respected throughout the process. Many blessings and appreciation to you, Thank you for creating a wonderful environment for all us to laugh, grow, chant, meditate, trip out to my third eye and chakras (wow-totally awesome!), relax, cry, be challenged, understand and learn. Muchas Gracias. Karen Walters

A Typical Day At This Yoga Retreat

Get comfortable, close your eyes and imagine waking up slowly, comfortable and carefree, the sun shining happily into your cozy and authentic digs. You put your favourite yoga pants on and step out into a paradise-like setting, with nature and wildlife surrounding you and a light breeze coming off the ocean, only minutes from your doorstep.
sayulita_2014_smallYou then walk a short distance to an energizing yoga class that focuses on pranayama (breath work), flowing standing sequences, and core strengthening. Afterwards, feeling rejuvenated and strong, you sit down with your new found friends (or old friends in some cases) to enjoy a healthy, colourful and gourmet Mexican brunch.
As the day continues, the hardest decision you will have to make is whether you want to relax at the beach or pool, go surfing, snorkelling, sea kayaking, whale watching, explore the surrounding jungle, enjoy a fabulous massage or take a siesta.
Later on, after some fun in the surf and sun, you will slip back into those yoga pants for another relaxing class that focuses on lunar Yin, forward bending, restorative postures, and guided meditation. Once we are finished, you will look forward to a night out in the gorgeous town of Sayulita, where you will meet the lovely locals, eat incredibly delicious food, and make many memories.
After the sun goes down and you back in your warm bed reflecting on your day, you drift off to sleep effortlessly, knowing that tomorrow brings you nothing but peace and tranquility.
